As a young boy growing up in Devonshire, I joined and played soccer for Devonshire Recreation Club, known today as the Cougars. Back in those days players were dedicated and stuck to the club that they played for, not like today’s players that change clubs like they change their boots.
I played all my football at the Cougars, except for one season that I played for Boulevard CC; at that time, I left the Cougars forBoulevard CC because of a conflict that we had at the club where the club officials were biased and lacked logic. The players and the coach didn't see eye to eye and the team needed a coaching change, but the officials gave an ultimatum - 'Take it or leave it'; so, a third of the players decided to leave and go to other clubs. By doing so broke up a hard-working talented bunch of players. The team fell from the top of the league to just about avoiding relegation into the Second Division [now First Division].
Use common sense, it is better to change a coach or lose an entire team. After joining
Boulevard, I played one season with them and during that season we gained promotion from Division Two [now First Division] into theBFA First Division [now Premier Division], as it was known back in those days. The very next season after gaining promotion I became coach of the BoulevardCC; in which the first year of coaching Boulevard we won the club's first major trophy - The Friendship Trophy. We then went on to win many other trophies like the F.A. Cup, Martonmere, and the League
In closing, being dedicated to your club goes a long way in a player's football career, stick it out, work hard and success would be in sight.
I would like to thank the Bermuda FootballAssociation Officials for the insight to put on such a lovely awards Ceremony that provides our young and talented players to achieve academically and to move on as Legends through Scholarship awards.
I am grateful and I appreciate the BFA Executive for selecting me as one of your Legends and naming one of the Legends AcademicFootball Scholarships in my name.
